When can you run a credit check in hiring?

A credit check is not a routine screening tool for every candidate. It is a role-specific measure that needs both justification and consent.

When can you run a credit check in hiring?

Credit checks are more sensitive than most checks

A credit check reveals information about a person’s financial situation, payment history and in some cases debt-related risk. It is a sensitive part of hiring verification. That makes it more intrusive than standard identity or employment verification.

Because of that sensitivity, employers cannot treat credit screening as a default step in recruitment. The rules also connect closely to GDPR requirements. It needs a clear and defensible reason tied to the role.

The role must create a legitimate need

Credit checks are typically relevant when the person will manage money, approve payments, control valuable assets or hold broad financial authority. In those cases, the employer can often explain why financial reliability matters.

For ordinary office roles, customer support positions or specialist jobs without direct financial exposure, that justification is usually much weaker or absent altogether.

Consent is still required

Even when the business case is strong, the candidate still needs explicit consent before the check is carried out. The employer should explain what will be checked, why it matters and how the result will be used.

If a result raises concerns, it should not automatically end the process. Candidates may have relevant context, and the employer should assess whether the issue is actually material to the role.

The best approach is narrow and documented

A good credit-screening policy is role-based, written down and used only where the company can show a proportionate need. That protects the candidate’s privacy and reduces legal risk for the employer.

Credit checks can be useful, but only when they are the right tool for the right job. In hiring, more data is not automatically better data.
